Robert Emery was born at the Old Lamar Homestead in Hancock County, Kentucky on June 9, 1848. He devoted his entire life to farming, was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and belonged to the Republican Party. During the Civil War, he ran away from home at the age of fifteen and joined the Confederate Army, but his uncle, Robert Coston Lamar, went after him and brought him back home.

Robert Emery Lamar was married to Mary Martha Stewart, daughter of George Washington and Nancy Elizabeth (Wroe) Stewart, on February 8, 1872, by Reverend J. L. Edrington at the residence of her grandmother, Martha Mariah (Gibbs) (Wroe) Faulconer, who was married to Eugene A. Faulconer. Mary Martha Stewart was born on October 25, 1853 in Hancock County.

Edmund Newman and Martha Elizabeth Lamar were born on his grandfather, Benoni Smith Lamar's farm in the Martindale Community. This is where Robert Emery and Mary Martha Lamar started keeping house after they were married. Benoni Stewart, Robert Bushrod and Rebecca Henrietta Lamar were born in Young County, Texas. Nannie Sue and Mary Ann Lamar were born on he farm of their grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth (Wroe) Stewart in the Martindale Community. William Martin and Ella Gibbs Lamar were born on the "Morgan Place" near Adair in Hancock County, Kentucky.

Robert Emery Lamar and his family moved to Young County, Texas in 1875 when their daughter, Martha Elizabeth, was only one year old. . They left Hawesville, Kentucky, on a river boat and traveled to St. Louis, Missouri. In St. Louis, they boarded a train bound for Dallas, Texas. In Dallas, the family had to wait until Robert Emery walked to Graham, Texas, to borrow a team of oxen to transport his family to Graham. The oxen were borrowed from an old widow in Graham. In transporting his family to Graham, Robert Emery had to cross the Brazon River. In fording the Brazon River, Mary Martha, wife of Robert Emery, thought the entire family would be washed down stream, however, the trip was completed without any mishap.

Robert Emery Lamar stayed in Texas long enough to dispose of his stock then returned to Kentucky in March 1884 during the Ohio River flood. He brought with him his high Texas boots and saddle. He landed in Indiana and as he crossed the Ohio River in a skif, it capsized near the Kentucky shore. However, he swam ashore and with his boots on hanging on to his saddle.

After returning to Kentucky, Robert Emery and Mary Martha lived for three years at the home of Mary Martha's mother in the Martindale Community. Then they moved to the "Morgan Place" near Adair, about five miles from Hawesville where he lived the rest of his life.

Robert Emery Lamar died at his home near Adair in Hancock County, KY, Friday, July 12, 1918, and was buried in the Lamar Cemetery near Martindale. Mary Martha Lamar died September 23, 1936 and was buried in the Hawesville Cemetery. Robert Emery Lamar was a pioneer settler of Young County, Texas where he pre-empted a tract of government land. Putting up the necessary buildings, he cleared and improved part of his purchase and was there engaged in tilling the soil and working by day at the carpenter's trade and as a stone mason. The family stayed in Texas for seven years. During that time, Robert Emery had only one good crop year and most of the time he worked as a carpenter.

During their seven years in Texas, many tales are told of the hot Texas winds and summer drouths. There were also many experiences with wild hogs, panters and bears. Edmund Newman, the oldest son, tells of getting trapped in a wagon by a wild boar and how he had to stay in the wagon until his father found him and ran the boar away.

Robert Emery Lamar was christened and baptized into the Catholic faith. However, Mary Martha (Stewart) Lamar, his wife, was of the Episcopal faith. Evidently, they were not regular members of any church for many years. Robert Emery passed the New Chapel Methodist Church in Hancock County every day when he went to work and when he returned home. One evening when he returned home from work, he told Molly, his wife, to get the children dressed up because they were going to attend the revival at the New Chapel Methodist Church. Edmund Newman Lamar, their eldest child, was 21 years old at that time. When Molly heard Robert Emery say he wanted to attend the revival, she said, "this is the answer to my many prayers." That very night the entire family joined the New Chapel Methodist Church.

Mary Martha Lamar said that Edmund Newman Lamar was baptized into the Catholic Church in Tell City, Indiana as a small boy. He often went to Tell City to attend what they called "a forty hour period of devotional When he joined the New Chapel Methodist Church, he didn't have to be baptized again. He later became a pillar of the Hawesville Methodist Episcopal Church where he served for many years as Superintendent of the Sunday School and a member of the Board of Stewards.
