Martha Ann was born in the second year of President James Monroe's administration.

They began their married life on a farm in the Martindale Community of Hancock County.

Martha Ann was reared in the Roman Catholic faith. However, Benoni Smith and several of the children were Protestants.

Martha Ann Lamar died October 1, 1911. She died at her nome near Jean, Texas. Martha Ann had been complaining of not feeling very well and, on retiring for the night, requested that someone place a glass of water near her bed so she could get a drink without disturbing anyone. As they thought the water would get warm, they told her they would bring her a fresh drink in the night. Her granddaughter, Henrietta, took her some water to drink about midnight and found her dead. Benoni Smith Lamar and Martha Ann Lamar were buried in Farmer, Texas.
