Mary Edwards was baptised on 2nd February 1789 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of Susannah Edwards, formerly Bollard, and her husband James Edwards. Mary was the second of their ten children.

Mary was married on 14th October 1807, aged 18, to an agricultural labourer named Joseph Bailey. They had eleven children between 1808 and 1830. Their eldest daughter was baptised at Pagham. They then moved to neighbouring North Mundham where their second and third children were baptised. Between 1812 and 1814 they returned to Pagham, living at the hamlet of Lagness between 1814 and 1820. Some time between 1820 and 1823 they moved to the nearby hamlet of Nyetimber, also in Pagham parish.

Mary's mother Susannah died in 1832. Mary did not long outlive her mother. She was buried at Pagham on 26th January 1833, aged 44. She and Joseph had been married for 25 years. Joseph outlived her by 27 years, but does not appear to have remarried.
