Henry Bailey was baptised on 4th August 1816 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. Henry was the fifth of their eleven children. The family lived in the hamlet of Lagness. Henry's maternal grandmother, Susannah Edwards, lived at Lagness too. She died in 1832. Henry's mother died in 1833, when Henry was sixteen years old.

The 1841 census finds Henry living with his aunt, Charlotte Green and her family at Lagness. She was Henry's late mother's sister.

Henry was married on 20th October 1841, aged 25, to Mary Bulbeck. They had two children, a daughter and a son, born in Pagham in the 1840s. Henry worked as a farm bailiff and they lived at Willow Hale, appearing there in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses. By 1861 their son was working as an apprentice wheelwright.

Mary died in 1863, aged 48. The following year Henry married again, with his second wife being a cook named Ellen Pollington. They married at South Bersted, and continued living at Willow Hale in Pagham. They had one daughter in 1866. The 1871 census finds them living at Willow Hale.

By 1881 they had moved to Nyewood Lane in Bognor, and Henry was described as a dairyman. Henry died on 11th July 1882, aged about 66. Ellen survived him by seven years.

    Surname: Bailey
    Abode: Lagness
    Occupation: Labourer
By whom the Ceremony was performed: William Marler

This baptism has been linked to the Henry Bailey who married Mary Bulbeck on the basis that their marriage record gives his father's name as Joseph Bailey, whilst in the censuses after their marriage Henry claimed to have been born around 1816 in Pagham. It is worth noting there was another Henry Bailey who claimed to have been born around the same time in Pagham, who married an Ellen (probably Ellen Bard, married Portsea 1843). That couple can be found in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. That Henry had died by 1871 as that Ellen appears in the 1871 census a widow at Westbourne.
