Joseph Bailey was baptised on 16th March 1783 at Farlington in Hampshire, just north of Portsmouth. He was the son of William and Mary Bailey. Some time between 1785 and 1787 the family left Farlington and moved about 18 miles east along the coast to Pagham in Sussex.
Joseph was married on 14th October 1807 at Pagham to Mary Edwards, who was from Pagham. They had eleven children between 1808 and 1830. Their eldest daughter was baptised at Pagham. They then moved to neighbouring North Mundham where their second and third children were baptised. Between 1812 and 1814 they returned to Pagham, living at the hamlet of Lagness between 1814 and 1820. Some time between 1820 and 1823 they moved to the nearby hamlet of Nyetimber, also in Pagham parish. Joseph worked as an agricultural labourer.
Mary died early in 1833, aged 44. She and Joseph had been married for 25 years. Joseph's first known grandchildren were born the following year.
Joseph appears in the 1841 census living at Nyetimber with three of his children, daughter-in-law and grandson. In 1845 Joseph's daughter Charlotte died aged 32.
Joseph appears in the 1851 census living with his son James at Nyetimber. Joseph's youngest daughter Ann died later that year.
In the 1861 census Joseph was boarding with a family named Hart at Nyetimber, and described as an almsman. He died the following year in the Westhampnett Union Workhouse, being buried back at Pagham on 1st April 1862. He was 79 years old. He had been a widower for 29 years.

1783 / March 16 / Joseph S[on] W[illia]m & Mary Bailey
This baptism has been linked to the Joseph Bailey who married Mary Edwards in Pagham in 1807 on the basis that as an adult Joseph gave his place of birth in 1851 as Pagham and in 1861 as "Wimmering". Wymering adjoins Farlington, and the couple William and Mary Bailey had another son baptised at Farlington in 1785 but then disappear from the records there. A couple called William and Mary Bailey started have children baptised at Pagham from 1787 onwards. It therefore seems that Joseph was born in the Farlington / Wymering area but moved to Pagham with his parents when still a small child.
