Facts and Events
Ann Bailey was baptised on 10th October 1830 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. Ann was the youngest of their eleven children. The family lived in the hamlet of Nyetimber. When Ann was only two years old her mother died.
Ann went to live with a couple named William and Mary Bailey - presumably relatives of her father's - who lived at Gosden Green in the parish of Westbourne, a few miles west of Pagham on the Sussex / Hampshire border. She appears with them in the 1841 census.
Ten years later Ann was in the General Infirmary in the nearby city of Chichester. She was described as a housekeeper. She died later that year, aged about 20. She was buried back at her native parish of Pagham on 14th September 1851.

This census appearance has been linked to the Ann Bailey baptised at Pagham on the basis that Ann does not appear to have died in Pagham between 1830 and 1841, but does not appear there in the census with her father. Her father later claimed to be from Wymering, just over the Hampshire side of the border near Gosden Green, and the couple that are looking after young Ann in this census would appear to be too young to be her parents. There appears to have been only one Ann Bailey from Pagham judging by the baptism records, and she was still alive in the 1851 census (see below).

No. 692 Name: Ann Bailey Abode: Pagham Age: 26 [1824/5] When buried: 14 Sep 1851 By whom the Ceremony was performed: R. Barker
This burial (and the likely associated death index entry) have been linked to the Ann Bailey baptised in 1830 on the basis that there is only one Ann Bailey anything close to this age appearing in the census a few months earlier in the Westhampnett district, and she was from Pagham, where this burial took place. Whilst the age is six years out this is not beyond the realms of human error, or may be a copy error between '26' and '20'.
