George Bailey was baptised on 20th April 1823 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. George was the eighth of eleven children. The family lived in the hamlet of Nyetimber in the parish of Pagham. George's maternal grandmother, Susannah Edwards, lived nearby at Lagness. She died in 1832. The following year, when George was nine years old his mother died.
The 1841 census George working as a servant for a farmer named Adames in Pagham village. On 31st July 1847, aged 24, George married Sarah Gardener at Pagham. They then settled at South Mundham, a hamlet in Pagham parish. They appear to have had at least six children together between the late 1840s and early 1860s. They appear in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses living at South Mundham. George's father Joseph died in 1862.
By 1871 George and Sarah had moved to West Dean, a few miles inland, where George worked as a farm bailiff. They 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses each find them living in the parish, with the 1871 and 1891 censuses specifying the hamlet of Chilgrove and the 1891 census naming the farm as Staple Ash Farm. In 1881 Sarah was described as a dairywoman.
George died in 1901, aged 77. He was buried at South Bersted (the parish which covered the town of Bognor), suggesting the family had left West Dean before his death. George and Sarah had been married for 53 years. Later that year Sarah appears in the census living at Grove Farm in Oving; she survived George by about eleven years.
