Facts and Events
Charlotte Bailey was baptised on 16th May 1812 at North Mundham in Sussex, daughter of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. Charlotte was the third of her parents' eleven children. Some time between 1812 and 1814 the family left North Mundham and moved to the neighbouring parish of Pagham, where they lived in the hamlet of Lagness between 1814 and 1820. Charlotte's maternal grandmother, Susannah Edwards, also lived at Lagness. Charlotte's parents moved from Lagness to Nyetimber, another hamlet in Pagham parish, between 1820 and 1823.
Charlotte's grandmother died in 1832. The following year Charlotte's mother died.
On 30th May 1836, aged 24, Charlotte married a gardener named William Challen. He was a widower, with four children from his first marriage. Charlotte and William went on to have another four children baptised at Pagham between 1837 and 1844, although one died young. The 1841 census finds Charlotte, William and their children living at Pagham Point. Charlotte's father Joseph was still living nearby at Nyetimber.
Charlotte died aged 32, being buried at Pagham on 21st February 1845. William outlived her by 22 years and remarried two years after her death. Charlotte's father also outlived her.

ch. 16 May 1812: Charlotte daughter of Joseph & Mary Bailey
This baptism has been linked to the Charlotte Bailey who married William Challen on the basis that the baptism is at the right time to tally with her age at death. When Charlotte and William married in 1836 she was said to be of the parish of Pagham. Whilst the Charlotte baptised in 1812 was not baptised in Pagham but in the neighbouring parish of North Mundham, it can be shown that her parents had moved to Pagham while she was small - her younger siblings were all baptised at Pagham. Several online trees have linked the Charlotte Bailey who married William Challen to the baptism of Charlotte Bailey in Pagham in 1814, daughter of Charles and Phoebe Bailey. This is considered incorrect. The Charlotte baptised in 1814 married James Pay at North Mundham in 1838, with her marriage explicitly saying she was daughter of Charles. Still other online trees believe that the Charlotte baptised at North Mundham in 1812 went on to marry James Lintott Gibbons and appear in the censuses together. This is also considered a mistake - that Charlotte's maiden name was Truslar or Trusler and they married at Pagham in 1832.
