Joseph Bailey was baptised on 17th April 1814 at Pagham on the Sussex coast, son of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. Joseph was the fourth of their eleven children and the eldest son. The family lived at Lagness, a hamlet to the north of the parish. Joseph's maternal grandmother, Susannah Edwards, also lived at Lagness. Some time between 1820 and 1823 they moved to Nyetimber, another hamlet in the parish. In 1832 Joseph's grandmother died. The following year Joseph's mother died when Joseph was eighteen years old.

Later that year, on 7th December 1833, aged 19, Joseph married a widow name Sally Binstead, formerly Horner. She was aged 27 and had three surviving children from her first marriage. They went on to have a further seven children between 1834 and 1846. The first four children were baptised at Pagham. The 1841 census finds Joseph and Sally living at Nyetimber along with their four children, Sally's father and her youngest surviving daughter from her first marriage. Two months after the 1841 census two of Joseph and Sally's sons, Benjamin and Joseph, died in quick succession, being buried five days apart in late August.

Joseph and Sally then left Pagham and moved to Selsey where the next two children were baptised in 1842 and 1844, before moving again to Sidlesham where their youngest child was baptised in 1846. The 1851 census finds them living at the Mill hamlet in Sidlesham, with Joseph working as a farm labourer. They were still there ten years later in the 1861 census.

By 1871 Sally and Joseph had moved to Appledram. They later returned to Sidlesham, appearing at Mill again in the 1881 census. On this occasion Sally was described as a domestic servant.

Joseph died in 1885, aged 71, being buried at Sidlesham on 1st October 1885. Sally survived him by less than two years, dying in 1887, aged 81.

This baptism has been linked to the Joseph Bailey who married Sally Horner in 1833 on the basis that in the censuses after their marriage Joseph consistently claimed to have been born around 1814 in Pagham, and one of the witnesses to the marriage was Charlotte Bailey, and the Joseph baptised in 1814 had an older sister named Charlotte, who appears not to have married until 1836. No other Joseph Bailey baptism around this time in Pagham has been found, nor any evidence to suggest the Joseph baptised in 1814 died young or married anyone else.
