Ellen Bailey was baptised on 1st May 1836 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of a labourer named Joseph Bailey and his wife Sally. Ellen appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at Nyetimber in Pagham.
In 1864, aged 28, Ellen married a seaman named Edmund Grant, who was from the neighbouring village of Sidlesham. They married at Sidlesham, but then moved to the major port of Portsmouth, a few miles to the west. In Portsmouth they had two daughters: Theresa in 1858 and Ellen in 1860. The 1861 census finds Ellen living with her husband and daughters at 13 Brighton Street. Curiously, Edmund was described as a superannuated seaman, perhaps suggesting he was suffering from ill health, despite the fact he was only in his twenties.
Edmund appears to have died some time between 1861 and 1864.
Ellen married again in 1864, back at Sidlesham. Her second husband was an agricultural engine driver named George Sherwin. They did not have any further children. They lived at different times in various villages in Sussex near the city of Chichester, finally settling in Tangmere. Ellen's two daughters lived with them at different times. Ellen's younger daughter died in 1881 shortly after getting married, aged just 21. The 1881 census has Ellen's widower son in law living with Ellen and George Sherwin in Oving.
Ellen died in 1911. She was 75 years old.
