Ellen Grant was born on 17th January 1860 at Portsmouth in Hampshire, daughter of Ellen Grant, formerly Bailey, and her husband Edmund Grant, a seaman. Young Ellen appears in the 1861 census living with her parents and older sister in Portsmouth. Some time between 1861 and 1864, Ellen's father Edmund appears to have died, although it is not clear exactly when.
Ellen's mother married again in 1864, with an agricultural engine driver named George Sherwin becoming Ellen's stepfather. She appears in the 1871 census living with her mother and stepfather at Sidlesham in Sussex.
In 1879, aged 19, Ellen married a seaman named George Edward Dore. Sadly, Ellen died less than two years after her marriage, early in 1881. She was just 21 years old. The 1881 census finds her recently bereaved husband George Dore living with her mother and stepfather. It is also worth noting that there was a baby named Ellen Dore whose death was registered at about the same time - it is quite possible that this baby Ellen was Ellen's daughter and that she died in complications after childbirth.
