Mary Bailey was baptised on 4th July 1826 at Pagham on the Sussex coast, daughter of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. Young Mary was the ninth of eleven children. The family lived at the hamlet of Nyetimber in Pagham. Mary's maternal grandmother, Susannah Edwards, lived a short distance away at Lagness. Mary's grandmother died in 1832. The following year Mary's mother died, when Mary was only six years old.
The 1841 census finds Mary living with her father, two brothers, sister-in-law and nephew at Nyetimber.
Mary was married on 7th February 1846, aged 19, to a wheelwright and carpenter named James Twine. They married at Westbourne, a little way west of Pagham along the coast. They settled in the hamlet of Prinsted in the parish of Westbourne, where they appear to have had at least nine children.
James died in 1871, aged 46. Mary survived him by less than nine years, dying in 1880, aged 53.

No. 478 When Baptized: 4 Jul 1826 Name: Mary Parents: Joseph & Mary Surname: Bailey Abode: Nyetimber Occupation: Labourer By whom the Ceremony was performed: J. Rhodes
This baptism has been linked to the Mary Bailey who married James Twine on the basis that their marriage certificate gives her father's name as Joseph Bailey, and in the censuses after their marriage she consistently claimed to have been born at Pagham around 1826.
