James Twine was baptised on 22nd August 1824 at Westbourne on the Sussex coast, son of Thomas and Charlotte Twine. Just two months after James's baptism his father died. In 1826 James's mother married a wheelwright named John Kinch. James appears in the 1841 census living with his mother and stepfather at Prinsted in Westbourne parish. By this time James was working as a carpenter.

On 7th February 1846, aged 21, James married Mary Bailey, who was originally from Pagham, a few miles along the coast to the east. They appear to have had at least nine children, including a pair of twins, and the family appears in each census from 1851 to 1871 living at Prinsted. James worked as a carpenter and wheelwright.

James died shortly after the 1871 census, aged 46. Mary survived him by less than nine years.

ch. 22 Aug 1824, Westbourne, Sussex: James son of Thomas & Charlotte Twine

Needs to be confirmed at West Sussex Record Office. This baptism has been linked to the James Twine who married Mary Bailey on the basis that their marriage certificate gives his father's name as Thomas Twine and in the censuses after their marriage James consistently claimed to have been born in Westbourne around 1824.
