Lot Bailey was baptised on 11th October 1818 at Pagham on the Sussex coast, son of Mary Bailey, formerly Edwards, and her husband Joseph Bailey, an agricultural labourer. Lot was the sixth of their eleven children. The family lived at Lagness, a hamlet in the north of the parish of Pagham. Lot's maternal grandmother, Susannah Edwards, also lived at Lagness. Some time between 1820 and 1823 Lot's parents moved from Lagness to the nearby hamlet of Nyetimber. Back at Lagness Lot's grandmother died in 1831. Lot's mother died in 1833, when Lot was only fourteen years old.

Lot was married at Pagham on 17th March 1839, aged 20, to Emily Crees, who was also from Pagham. They appear in the 1841 census living with Lot's father at Nyetimber. Between the late 1830s and mid 1850s they appear to have had at least eight children, all born in Pagham. The 1851 census finds them living with Emily's widowed mother in Pagham village, with Lot working as a farm bailiff. Lot and Emily were still in the village in 1861, although Lot was now described simply as an agricultural labourer. Lot's father died in 1862.

By 1871 they had moved to the neighbouring parish of South Bersted, where they lived in the hamlet of North Bersted. Lot by this time had become a carpenter and thatcher. Emily died in 1876, aged 56. She was buried back at her native Pagham on 23rd November 1876.

Just under two years later, aged 59, Lot married again. His second wife was Ellen Lambeth, who was 60. They had probably known each other since childhood as she was also from Nyetimber, although she had spent most of her adult life working as a domestic nurse away from Pagham. They settled at Chalcraft Lane in the North Bersted area of South Bersted parish, living at Laburnum Cottages there. Lot continued to work as a carpenter.

Lot died in 1895, aged 76, and was buried back at Pagham on 14th March 1895. Ellen survived him by about three years.
