Ellen Lambeth was baptised on 9th May 1818 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of an agricultural labourer named Thomas Lambeth (or Lambert) and his wife Ann. The family lived in the hamlet of Nyetimber. They later moved to the nearby hamlet of Rose Green, where Ellen and her parents appear in the 1841 census.

By 1851 Ellen was working as a nurse for a family in Ryde on the Isle of Wight. By 1861 she was working for a family with three children under two years old at Bishopstone back in Sussex, although the opposite end of the county from Pagham.

Ellen's next sighting is on 20th July 1878, aged 60, when she married a widower named Lot Bailey, a carpenter who was also from Pagham. They had probably known each other since childhood, as he had grown up at Nyetimber. They married at South Bersted, the parish which covered the town of Bognor. They settled at Chalcraft Lane in the North Bersted area of the parish, living at Laburnum Cottages there.

Lot died in 1895, aged 76. Ellen survived him by about three years, dying in 1898, aged 79.
