Mary Bulbeck's origins have yet to be established. She claimed to have been born around 1814 a Lewes in Sussex, daughter of a labourer named William Bulbeck, but no corresponding baptism has yet been found. Mary's first confirmed sighting is on 20th October 1841 when she was married at Pagham to an agricultural labourer named Henry Bailey. At the time of their marriage Mary was living nearby at Chichester, and the witnesses to the marriage were George, Sarah and Eleanor Bulbeck, who were presumably relatives of hers.
Mary and Henry settled in the Willow Hale area of Pagham, appearing there in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses with Henry working as a farm bailiff. They appear to have had two children, a daughter and a son, both born in the 1840s.
Mary died in 1863. She was said to be 48 years old. Henry survived her by nineteen years and remarried the year after her death.
