Ellen Pollington was baptised on 19th December 1824 at South Bersted in Sussex, daughter of an agricultural labourer named Jacob Pollington and his wife Mary. She appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and sister at Chalcraft Lane in South Bersted.
By 1851 Ellen was working as a cook for a land valuer and estate agent named Jonathan Stapley and his wife Charlotte, who lived at Victoria Place in the seaside town of Bognor, which at that time was within Ellen's native parish of South Bersted. Ten years later Ellen was working as a cook for John and Charlotte Stapley's son Frederick and his family, who lived at 82 Grand Parade in Brighton, 26 miles east of Bognor, where he served as a curate.
On 12th April 1864, aged 39, Ellen married a widower named Henry Bailey. They married at South Bersted, and settled initially at Willow Hale to the west of Bognor in the parish of Pagham, where Henry worked as a farm bailiff. They had one daughter in 1866. The 1871 census finds them living at Willow Hale.
By 1881 they had moved to Nyewood Lane in Bognor, and Henry was described as a dairyman. Henry died in 1882, aged about 66. Ellen survived him by seven years. She died on 28th July 1889 in hospital in the nearby city of Chichester. She was 64 years old.

This baptism has been linked to the Ellen Pollington who married Henry Bailey on the basis that their marriage record gives her father's name as Jacob Pollington and in the censuses after their marriage she consistently claimed to have been born around 1824 in South Bersted.
