James Edwards was baptised on 24th May 1791 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Susannah Edwards, formerly Bollard, and her husband James Edwards. Young James was the third of their ten children.

In 1816, aged 25, James married Fanny Johnson at Boxgrove. After their marriage they initially lived in Pagham in the hamlet of Lagness, where their first four children were born. Some time between 1823 and 1826 they moved to Runcton in the parish of North Mundham where they had another five children, although one of these died when only one year old.

James's mother died in 1832. It has yet to be established when James's father died.

The 1841 census finds James, Fanny and their children living at Marsh Farm in the Runcton area of North Mundham. Some time between 1841 and 1851 they moved the nearby city of Chichester, living at Kingsham on the southern edge of the city.

James's brother William ran the White Horse at Oving, just east of Chichester. William died in 1853, after which his widow Eliza ran the public house for just over a year, but in 1854 Eliza transferred the license to James. James and Fanny ran the White Horse for several years, appearing there in the 1861 census. They were joined there by a granddaughter, Elizabeth, although it has yet to be established which of their children's daughter she was.

Some time in the 1860s the family moved back into Chichester, where they lived on North Street. James died in 1866, aged 75, and was buried in Chichester at the church of St Peter the Less, on 1st October 1866. Fanny outlived him by nearly seven years.

Baptisms / 1791 / May 29 James Son of James & Susanna Edwards

This baptism has been linked to the James Edwards who married Fanny Johnson on the basis that in the censuses he consistently gave his place of birth as Pagham and age suggesting he was born around 1791. Also James took over his late brother William's public house, and in the 1881 census James's daughter Susannah had James's brother Henry living with her.
