Fanny Johnson was baptised on 20th May 1798 at Boxgrove in Sussex, daughter of a Phyllis Johnson.
On 14th July 1816 when she was married at Boxgrove to an agricultural labourer named James Edwards from Pagham, a few miles south of Boxgrove. After their marriage they initially lived in Pagham in the hamlet of Lagness, where their first four children were born. Some time between 1823 and 1826 they moved to Runcton in the parish of North Mundham where they had another five children, although one of these died when only one year old.
The 1841 census finds Fanny and James and their children living at Marsh Farm in the Runcton area of North Mundham. Some time between 1841 and 1851 they moved to the nearby city of Chichester, living at Kingsham on the southern edge of the city.
James's brother William ran the White Horse at Oving, just east of Chichester. William died in 1853, after which his widow Eliza ran the public house for just over a year, but in 1854 Eliza transferred the license to her brother-in-law James. James and Fanny ran the White Horse for several years, appearing there in the 1861 census. They were joined there by a granddaughter, Elizabeth, although it has yet to be established which of their children's daughter she was.
During the 1860s they moved back into Chichester, living on North Street. James died in 1866, aged 75.
Fanny outlived James by just under seven years. The 1871 census finds her running a lodging house at South Pallant Street in Chichester. She died in 1873, aged about 75.
