Maria Edwards was baptised on 1st November 1835 at North Mundham in Sussex, daughter of Fanny Edwards, formerly Johnson, and her husband James Edwards, a labourer. Maria was the eighth of the couple's nine children. Her baptism records that the family lived in the hamlet of Runcton. The 1841 census finds Maria living with her parents and siblings at Marsh Farm in the parish of North Mundham.

By 1851 Maria had left home and was working as a house servant for an elderly banker and his family in the nearby city of Chichester. Maria has yet to be traced after 1851.
