Frederick Edwards was born in 1838 at North Mundham in Sussex, son of Fanny Edwards, formerly Johnson, and her husband James Edwards, an agricultural labourer. He was the youngest of their nine children.

Frederick appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Marsh Farm in North Mundham. By 1851 the family had moved to the hamlet of Kingsham, which was in the parish of St Pancras in Chichester, although just outside the built up area of the city.

In 1860 Frederick was married, aged 22, to Emma Steed. They married at Portsmouth, where both were living on Lucknow Street. By the time of the 1861 census they had returned to Chichester, living at Little London with Emma's grandmother. Frederick was working as a blacksmith, although he was also described as a Greenwich Pensioner, suggesting he had seen military service.

Frederick and Emma had one son, Frederick James, later in 1861. However, neither Frederick nor Emma has been traced after 1861. Their son Frederick James appears in the 1871 census living with Emma's parents.

This child has been linked to the Frederick Edwards who married Emma Steed on the basis that their marriage certificate gives his father's name as James Edwards, licensed victualler - the James the father of the Frederick born in 1838 had taken over the White Horse at Oving in 1854. In the census after Frederick and Emma's marriage he gave an age suggesting he was born around 1838. Although he gave his birthplace as Chichester rather than North Mundham it is clear that the family had moved to Chichester whilst Frederick was still a child, appearing there in the 1851 census - and it is not far from North Mundham to Chichester anyway.
