Emma Steed was born in 1841 at Chichester in Sussex, daughter of a carpenter and builder named Benjamin Seed and his wife Mary Ann. Emma was baptised at West Wittering, a few miles away, which was where her mother was from. Emma appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and elder sister on Washington Street in Chichester.
The 1851 census finds Emma living with her mother and younger sisters at North Bersted, a hamlet in the parish of South Bersted.
In 1860 Emma was married, aged 19, to Frederick Edwards. They married at Portsmouth, where both were living on Lucknow Street. By the time of the 1861 census they had returned to Chichester, living at Little London with Emma's grandmother. Frederick was working as a blacksmith, although he was also described as a Greenwich Pensioner, suggesting he had seen military service.
Emma and Frederick had one son, Frederick James, later in 1861. However, neither Emma nor Frederick has been traced after 1861. Their son Frederick James appears in the 1871 census living with Emma's parents.

ch. 11 Apr 1841, West Wittering, Sussex: Emma daughter of Benjamin & Mary Ann Steed
Needs to be confirmed at West Sussex Record Office. This baptism has been linked to the Emma Steed who married Frederick Edwards on the basis that their marriage certificate names her father as Benjamin Steed, and in the census after their marriage Emma gave her place of birth as Chichester, corresponding with the place of birth given by this child Emma in the 1851 census.
