Lucy Grant was baptised on 13th February 1815 at Sidlesham in Sussex, daughter of Lucy Grant, formerly Richardson, and her husband Charles Grant, who worked at different times as a labourer, blacksmith and fisherman. When Lucy was three years old her mother died. A year later her father married a Mary Ann Chaffer, who therefore became Lucy's stepmother.
In 1834, aged 19, Lucy was married to a man named Ephraim Cousins. Lucy's stepbrother George Chaffer was one of the witnesses to the marriage. Lucy and Ephraim moved to the nearby parish of Hunston, where they appear in the 1841 census with a number of children.
Eprhaim died in 1842. Lucy married again in 1846, with her second husband being an agricultural labourer called George Harris. They stayed in Hunston for the first few years after their marriage, appearing there in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses with several children. Some time between 1861 and 1871 they left Hunston and moved about 250 miles to the north to Cottingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where they appear in the 1871 census. By 1881 they had moved even further north to Thornaby on Yorkshire's northern border, near the town of Stockton.
Lucy died in 1886 in the Middlesbrough Registration District (which covered Thornaby). She was 71. George outlived her by some years; he appears in the 1891 census living with their daughter Emily.
