John Cousins was baptised on 13th November 1836 at Hunston in Sussex, son of Lucy Cousins, formerly Grant, and her husband Ephraim Cousins, an agricultural labourer. He was the second of their five children.

John appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Church Lane in Hunston.

In 1842, when John was six years old, his father Ephraim died. Just over three years later his mother married again, with her second husband being an agricultural labourer named George Harris who thus became John's stepfather. The 1851 census finds the fourteen year old John working as an agricultural labourer and living with his mother, stepfather and siblings at Hunston Common.

John has yet to be researched after 1851.
