Henry Cousins was baptised on 1st March 1835 at Hunston in Sussex, son of Lucy Cousins, formerly Grant, and her husband Ephraim Cousins, an agricultural labourer. Henry was the eldest of the couple's five children. The 1841 census finds Henry living with his parents and siblings at Church Lane in Hunston.

In 1842, when Henry was seven years old, his father Ephraim died. Just over three years later his mother married again, with her second husband being an agricultural labourer called George Harris, who thus became Henry's stepfather. The 1851 census finds the fifteen year old Henry working as an agricultural labourer and living with his mother, stepfather and siblings at Hunston Common.

Henry has yet to be researched after 1851.
