George Harris was baptised on 1st August 1821 at Hunston in Sussex, son of Charles and Ruth Harris.
In 1846, when he was 24 years old he married a widow named Lucy Cousins, formerly Grant. She was six years older than him and had five children from her first marriage. George and Lucy would go on to have another four children together at Hunston between 1846 and 1856.
Some time between 1861 and 1871 they left Hunston and moved about 250 miles to the north to Cottingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where they appear in the 1871 census. By 1881 they had moved even further north to Thornaby on Yorkshire's northern border, near the town of Stockton.
Lucy died in 1886 in the Middlesbrough district (which covered Thornaby). She was 71. George outlived her by some years; he appears in the 1891 census living with their daughter Emily at Moss, near the southern edge of Yorkshire. He died in 1897 in the Doncaster district, which covered Moss. He was 76 years old.
