Moss, according to a gazetteer of the 1820s provided by GENUKI, was in the parish of Campsall, the wapentake of Osgoldcross, and the liberty of Pontefract; 6 miles west of Thorne. Its population was 242.

Moss is recorded as a civil parish in the Doncaster Rural District. (Rural districts existed fron 1894 to 1974.) Since 1974 the whole of Doncaster Rural District has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. Historically, Moss was in the ecclesiastical parish of Campsall in the wapentake of Osgoldcross.
