Mary Harris was baptised on 21st September 1856 at Hunston in Sussex, daughter of Lucy Harris, late Cousins, formerly Grant, and her second husband George Harris, an agricultural labourer. Mary appears in the 1861 census living with her parents and siblings at Hunston.

Some time between 1861 and 1871 the family left Sussex, moving 250 miles to the north to Cottingham in East Yorkshire, where Mary appears in the 1871 census living with her parents at King Street. Mary has yet to be researched after 1871.
