Biography

Rev James Bean was born in Exeter, NH, the son of Jeremiah Bean and Ruth (Johnson) Bean. James became a Quaker minister and the organizer of the Division Quaker Meeting at Brentwood. Rev Bean was elected Town Selectman in 1762. In 1776, he refused to sign the Test Act, on the grounds that he was a Quaker and objected to war. It seems as if every man in the community wanted Rev Bean to take care of his estate, after his death. Rev Bean was named as Executor or Administrator of wills, deeds, and other conveyances of legal documents in both Exeter and Brentwood. Rev Bean was married three times and there is documentation of at least 21 children from these marriages. He first married Ruth Abigail Sanborn (1709-1734), the daughter of John and Sarah (Philbrick) Sanborn. Of this marriage were born Enoch Bean (1729), James Bean (born in Brentwood, who married Mary Gordon, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Scribner) Gordon, Abigail Bean (died childless) and Keziah Bean (married on September 25, 1794, in Kingston to Henry Sleeper) On July 4, 1734,[1] in Brentwood, NH, Rev Bean married Abigail Goodridge (1712-1745), the daughter of Edmund and Hannah (Dole) Goodridge. Of this marriage were born Elizabeth, Hezekiah, Micajah, Mary (circa 1735), Lovey (1739-1837) and Jacob T. Bean (died December 12, 1813.) On January 20, 1745 (?), Rev Bean married in Amesbury, MA to Lydia Hoag (born March 20, 1720, Hampton, NH). There were eleven children born to this marriage. (See Family Page) John H. Blaisdell, an early Bean Genealogist, and a direct descendant of James by his first marriage confirms the information given here. Judge Josiah Drummond, in his address to the 1896 Bean Reunion, says with regard to the second marriage, "While the authority upon which this statement rests has not been ascertained, there is little doubt that it is correct."
