Facts and Events
[edit] BiographyEnoch Bean was born in 1729, in Brentwood, New Hampshire, the eldest son of Reverend James Bean and Ruth Abigail (Sanborn) Bean. On June 11, 1756, in Brentwood, New Hampshire, Enoch married Love Gordon, a daughter of Thomas Gordon and Mary (Scribner) Gordon. [1] Enoch's father gave him forty acres in Gilmanton, New Hampshire, which was originally owned by his grandfather, Jeremiah Bean, but no one had lived there or developed it. In 1751, Enoch signed a pledge and gave bond, to settle at Gilmanton along with four of his Bean cousins, John, Jonathan, Joshua and James. On September 5, 1765, Enoch sold this land by deed to Andrew Glidden, the deed signed at Poplin, New Hampshire. It would seem that Enoch remained in Gilmanton, perhaps on separate land purchased by him, as he was there in 1776, and his name appears on the list of those who refused to sign the Test Act. Like his father, Enoch was a Quaker and this is the Act he refused to sign:
In 1783, Enoch was a town representative from Strafford, Vermont. In 1800, Enoch build a water powered carding Mill on the Lower Falls at Strafford, and did custom wool carding for the people in the surrounding area. Enoch's younger sister, Lovey Bean, was married in Brentwood and moved to Strafford at the same time he did. She lived there to the age of 98. [edit] Sources
