William Marsh Conkling, son of Isaac and Rebecca (Marsh) Conkling was born on 11 March 1815 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He married Elizabeth D. Glen who was born on 10 October 1819. The 1850 and 1860 census shows William as a farmer in Sycamore Township (Hamilton County), Ohio. William was a blacksmith and farmer by trade. A biographical history states that William attended school under John Talbot and that in 1849 "by industry and frugality" he had saved enough money to buy a house. The family had settled in Lyons (Rice County), Kansas sometime after 1860. Elizabeth died there on 2 June 1896 and William died there on 21 June 1896. They are buried in the Lyons County Public Cemetery in Lyons, Kansas. Birth and death dates for William were obtained from the DAR application of their granddaughter, Yetta Conkling Speck.
