Isaac Conkling, second son of Joseph and Rebecca (Ross) Conkling was born on 9 December 1791 in Essex County, New Jersey and married Rebecca Marsh on 11 June 1814. According to a biographical history, Rebecca was the daughter of John Marsh who came to Hamilton County in 1794. (Ref. Biographical Encyclopedia of Ohio of the 19th Century (1876). The family of Isaac and Rebecca lived on a farm in the Sycamore Township of Cincinnati (Hamilton County), Ohio (Ref History of Howard and Tipton County, Indiana). In August, 1820 two of their young daughters died within six days of each other. Isaac died on 29 June 1849 in Sycamore Township.

Rebecca Marsh was born in New Jersey on 18 August 1794 and outlived her husband, dying on 17 December 1879 in Hamilton County, Ohio. The 1870 census shows Rebecca listed as "infirm" and living with the family of her son, John in Sycamore township of Hamilton County. A few days after Christmas in 1879, Jerome B. Conkling wrote to his cousin Pierson Cory Conkling to report the death of his mother, Rebecca (Ref. Letter dated 27 December 1879. from J.B. Conkling 78 Astor House, New York City to P.C. Conkling).
