Isaac Clark Conkling, son of Isaac and Rebecca (Marsh) Conkling was born on 21 November 1823 in Hamilton County, Ohio. Family legend states that Isaac was a gold miner in California from 1849-51. His brother John was also a gold miner in California during this time. The Cincinnati Daily Gazette reports his 16 March 1853 marriage to Matilda L. Patton, daughter of Jacob M. and Mary Ann (Ferris) Patton. Matilda is listed as a member of the Baptist church in Lockland, Ohio in 1853 and records show that Isaac was admitted as a member in 1857. They are not listed in the 1870 census for Tipton County, Indiana, but were there by 1880. Matilda was born on 10 September 1828 and may have died in Blue Ash, Ohio around 8 April 1903 as her brother-in-law, John Conkling filed her probate records in Hamilton County, Ohio. Isaac died on 2 May 1904 and is buried at Brookside Cemetery in Wildcat Township (Tipton County), Indiana. His will, dated 10 March 1904 and recorded 10 May 1904 was filed in Tipton County, Indiana. His estate was divided into six equal parts with 1/6 going to his grandsons Fred and Roy Conklin, 1/6 to his grandson Herber Conklin and 1/6 each to his four surviving children, Kittie S. Thornburg, Addie V. Scott, Clifford W. Conklin, and Edgar C. Conklin.
