Facts and Events
Jerome B. Conkling, son of Isaac and Rebecca (Marsh) Conkling was born on 24 February 1830 in Ohio. He married Mary Emma Gates. In 1870, he was the proprietor of Brighton House, a sizable hotel in Cincinnati. The 1871 Cincinnati City Directory shows him still living at Brighton House, but identifies him as a lawyer. The 1872 City Directory lists him as an attorney and commissioner of deeds. In 1872, the family lived at 503 Court Street. By 1879, Jerome was an attorney in New York City. On 27 December 1879 Jerome wrote a letter from 78 Astor House in New York City to his cousin Pierson Cory Conkling of Butler County, Ohio. The letter was brief and reported the death of Jerome’s mother on 17 December 1879. The family may have later returned to Cincinnati as Jerome’s great nephew, Edgar C. Conkling of Buffalo NY reports that his aunt used to talk about visiting Jerome Conkling in Cincinnati. References
