William Clark Conkling, son of William and Elizabeth (Glen) Conkling was born on 9 September, 1851 in Sharonville (Hamilton County), Ohio. He is listed in most records under his middle name, Clark. In 1851 Clark moved to Colorado, but by 1873 Clark had moved with his family to Kansas. The Santa Fe Trail went through Lyons, Kansas and in 1872 the Santa Fe Rail Road advertised land holdings. This may have encouraged the family’s move from Ohio. They lived in Lyons (Rice County), Kansas where Clark was editor of the town newspaper. Clark also lived briefly in Colorado, but returned to Lyons by 1879 where he established the Lyons Republican. On 2 April 1884, he married Laura Belle Stone in Lyons. Laura was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania on 13 May 1862. In 1920, Clark and Laura were still living in Lyons and their son, Gerald was still living at home. They were the parents of seven children, six of whom were living in 1900. An article in a county history about Clark and his family states that his family had originally come from Long Island.
