It appears as though John Shearer emigrated to Canada in 1860.... most likely about the time that his father and his new family moved to Leigh Netherfielddyke.. Family stories have John being accompanied to Canada by his step mother Elizabeth who then returned to Scotland. Research has revealed that this story was applied to the wrong person.
