Facts and Events
Despite the assertions of his mother's obituary, William Martin Shearer actually settled in Vermilion ALBERTA, not Saskatchewan. Part of the confusion may stem from the fact that Vermilion Alberta is located on the Saskatchewan River. In any event, according to Chapman researcher Sunny Geary, one of his Martin (who married a Chapman) aunts went to Vermilion as well .It is tempting to speculate that they might have gone west at the same time..about 1904. The Elmanac reports a record of Wm M. Shearer owning Concession 3, Lot 12 from 1898-1904. William Martin Shearer's obituary states that he and his family went west in 1907. A newspaper report of his marriage to Margaret Bryce indicates that the wedding was held at Elmbank farm, home of the Robert Cleland's. The reason for this is not clear at this time. It may be that Margaret was somehow related to the Cleland's. References
