John George Cooper was born on 15th August 1840 at South Hylton in the township of Ford in the parish of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham. He was the son of Jane Cooper, late Bradshaw, formerly Watson, and her husband John Cooper, a potter. Young John appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings at South Hylton.

When John was 16 years old his father died. The 1861 census finds John living with his widowed mother at Ford Terrace in South Hylton. By this time he was working as a joiner in the local ship-building industry. Later that year John married Elizabeth Jane Robinson, who was three years his senior and originally from Alnwick in Northumberland.

John and Elizabeth stayed in South Hylton, where they had at least nine children during the 1860s and 1870s. John's mother died in 1864.

Each census from 1871 to 1901 finds John and Elizabeth and several of their children living together in South Hylton - and from 1881 to 1901 they were always listed at Ferry Boat Row, where they had a four roomed house. In 1901 their youngest daughter and her husband were living with them, along with two small grandchildren.

John died in 1906, aged 66. Elizabeth outlived him by six years.
