Joseph George Cooper was baptised on 3rd January 1864 at South Hylton in the township of Ford in the parish of Bishopwearmouth, County Durham. He was the son of Elizabeth Jane Cooper, formerly Robinson, and her husband John George Cooper, a joiner. Joseph appears in each of the censuses from 1871 to 1891 living with his parents and siblings at South Hylton. In 1881 he was working in a paper mill, and in 1891 he was working as a driller. He has yet to be researched after 1891.

It would appear that the child's first name and his father's name have been swapped - the censuses show that the boy was called Joseph George, whilst his father was John rather than Joseph.
