Elizabeth Jane Robinson said she was born in about 1837 at Alnwick in Northumberland. Her first confirmed sighting however is not until her marriage in 1861 to John George Cooper in the Sunderland area of County Durham.

Elizabeth and John settled at John's native village of South Hylton, just west of Sunderland. He worked as a joiner in the shipyards on the banks of the River Wear. Between 1862 and 1879 Elizabeth and John had ten children born at South Hylton, although their eldest son died as a boy of just eight years old. In each census from 1881 to 1901 the family was living at Ferry Boat Row in South Hylton, in a four roomed house.

John died in 1906, aged 66. After his death, Elizabeth lived with her youngest daughter (also called Elizabeth) and her family, still in South Hylton. Elizabeth died in 1913, aged 75.
