I think most records for this ancestor show surname spelling of Braucht. George was with brothers Daniel and Adam,Jr. in Mississippi (Yazoo City, Vicksburg, and Lexington). George took Daniel's deed to Warren,Co.,IA in 1850 and returned to PA in 1853 (probably should be 1952). My notes show that Daniel and his new wife Mary moved to Warren Co.,IA in 1852.

See Warren County, IA Deaths Book I, pg. 9: George W. Braucht, male white age 50 farmer died 5 Dec. 1880 (which was in error as correct year was 1881) nationality = German born PA, died at Indianola, buried 17 Dec. 1881 at Indianola. July 1870 Warren Co., IA Census Squaw Twp. shows Braught; Geo. M. 38 b. PA, Susan F. 38, b. PA, Theodore M. 16 b. Miss, Geo. M., 12 b. IA, Tabella, F. 9 b. IA, James, M. 4 b. IA, Mary F., -- much of this record was barely legible. Next door was John MUSSLEMAN, 24. plus more Mussleman and LEE families nearby. Caution: Putnam County, OH records show G.W. Braught married Mary Ann Crist 28 Nov. 1847 (no reason to think this Geo. W. and that G.W. are same people, but likely same family heritage).
See US Iowa Warren County Census' of 1860, White Oak Twp, pg. 835 line 27 shows Braucht, George W., 31, white male farmer, $2000 real property, $600 personal property, born PA and others:Susan, 30, white female b. PA; Theodore C., white male 7, b. Miss; George W., 2, white male b. IA; and Sara Keeling, 10 white female, b. IN. Not at all sure who Sara is or why she was with this family then.
See Warren Co. Courthouse LDS film and Warren Co., IA Deaths Book pg. 9. The Iowa census of 1852 had George and family living next to his older brother Daniel and family in White Oak Twp.
In the US Iowa Warren Co. 1870 census George had moved with family to Squaw Twsp, with real estate value of $7,425. It shows Braucht, George, 39 farmer born in PA having $7426 real property and $2146 in personal property with wife Susan, 38 born in PA. Children there were Theodore, 16 b. Miss; George, 12 b. IA (all younger sibling also born in Iowa); Isabella, 9; Leona, 5; and Marg, 3. Living next farm at that time was another brother, Adam, and that family.

According to History of Warren County, Iowa 1987, pg 346 George W. Braucht came there in August of 1852 from Virginia and settled in the NW corner, Sect. 1 of Virginia Township. We knew that George joined brother Daniel in Yazoo, Miss for a time (where he had first son Theodore in 1854, but moved to Warren Co., IA within the next several months, where next son, Franklin was born and died after June 1856.

This author recalls how Iowa Gov. William Beardsley (a Virginia Twp. and New Virginia town history buff and father of the author's close friend, Dan Beardsley, in Des Moines during 1948-56) assured that these Braucht families were indeed my family. George Braucht was one mayor there. Incidentally, the Gov. was at my IA. State Univ. residence seeking son Dan early in the day when the Gov. was killed by his auto accident (he usually drove himself and was always in a hurry).
See IGS Cemetery and Deaths Records Book of Warren Co., IA pg 143 for Indianola IOOF Cemetery row 26 N>S for George, wife Susan, and Benjamin Franklin, son. No where else have I found record of Benjamin Franklin, son. The Indianola, IA Cemetery record shows him as B.F. Braught, interred Dec. 19, 1856. This family burial lot is in IOOF # 786 (left fork of entrance back past 1st grass lane and 10 rows West, several stones South.

Be aware that in Iowa 1920 Census for Wapello Co., Ottumwa house#409 (Vol.82, ED 155, Sheet 12, line 17) there is George M. Braucht, age 27, b. IA with Vera May, wife 26 b. IA; Katherine E., dau. age 2 11/12 born in Iowa; and Jane Carroll, dau. age 7/12 born IA. Also, Iowa 1920 census for Warren Co., Vol. 3 Ed 222, sheet 9, line ?3, New Virginia is found (poor copy, but following is fairly accurate) Braucht, G.W., age 22 b. IA with Florence, wife, age (can't read), b. IA Warren Co., IA Historical Library has a document of Squaw Twp. Militia Register dated June 1864 that includes the name of Braught, George, age 33. There are some obvious careless errors in that document, but it is reasonable to assume that the George listed there is this same George Braught here. That list also includes Adam Braught, Edward Barrick, George Bickel, and Daniel Braucht (Daniel listed on a different page with surname spelled -cht: just one more example of the insignificance in these spellings). Also found there is an obituary from the Peoples Advocate, p3. col. 4 for Braugh, George W., born Dauphin Co., Penn Aug. 2, 1830 Married Susan Hine 28 March 1852. They have lived in this county over 25 yrs. He died in Indianola Dec. 15, 1880. Another brief article mentions a December 3, 1880 IO-AOUW Memorial for Braucht, George W. I have no idea what those letters represent, but assume it is some organization.
