Facts and Events
See Warren Co.,IA Births Records Through 1920 for children of G.W. & S.E.Sarah (Sickle) Braught, Also see records from Steven Roy, 2340 Ashworth Rd., West DM, IA 50265 (Apr 30, 1995). Steven Roy records indicate a second wife named Florence Crum (b.1870, d.1939), but age difference makes this in need of added verification before adding second spouse to this record (suspect that to be a different Geo. Braucht ) My research produced somewhat different data on this family than that shown in 1998 Heim Family Book by Pam Osborne. At Warren Co., Hewitt Cemetery is an old small stone inscribed Infant Mattie dau of G.W. and S.E. Braucht died April 23, 1888 Aged (stone sunken below age numbers, but see her birth date from other records). Of course this most likely is a child of this marriage, perhaps born prematurely. The Peoples Advocate p.3 col 4. obituary found at Warren Co., Historical Library Vol. I Scrapbook by Harris 1929-40 SW Warren reported that (some paraphrased) Pioneer resident of New Virginia died at home following brief illness. New Virginia and community was shocked Thursday to learn of the death of Geo. W. Braucht. Mr. Braucht had been in the best of health for a number of years but is last ilness was of short duration, having taken ill Wednesday and passed away the next morning. He was one of the early rural mail carriers as well as operator of the local telephone exchange for many years besides serving as mayor of New Virginia. Services were conducted by Rev. Clarence Moore at the M.E. Church and interment was at the New Virginia Cemetery. George W. was son of Geo. and Susan Braucht born in Warren Co., IA Oct 10 1857, died at this New Virginia home Nove 14, 1935 age 78 years 1 month, 4 days. On Jan. 12, 1881 he married Sarah E. Stickel, who died March 17, 1899 (remainder of the page was missing). Warren Co., IA Marriage Book 1880-1899 pg. 5: Braucht, George W. to Stickly, Sarah E. 12 Jan 1881. I wonder if Sarah's surname was not pronounced as Stickly, but spelled Stickle at times (and other times as Stickel). Iowa 1885 Warren Co. Census Squaw Twp.(no index) shows house 54 family 56 with George W. Braucht, 27 farmer, Sarah E., 24; Lester C., 2 son and Audry L, O dau. Iowa 1895 Census roll239 Warren Co. Squaw Twp. house 171, fam. 171shows Geoge Braucht, 37; Sarah E., 34; Lester (male),12; Audry (female), 10; Peeter G. 8; Money D. (female) 6; Iril L. (male) 4; and Alma L. 0. All listed as M.E. (Methodist) religion. They lived next door to George W. Gier family and near both Theordore and Rebecca A. Braught and Adam and Mary E. Braucht. Some of the writing was not very clear on this entire document. 1920 Iowa census vol. 03 ED 222 sh 9 line 3 (these numbers were very faint and could be incorrect), Warren Co., New Virginia shows Braucht, G.W. 22, b. IA; and Florence, wife, born IA. This is a very poor copy In Warren County, Iowa 1908 History list of Masons is a George Braught. May not be this person. References
