Uncle of Colonel William Bratton, commander at Hucks Depot American Revolution, whose grandson was Brigadeer General John Bratton, CSA.

Capt Robert BRATTON was born on 22 May 1712 in Donegal, Northern Ireland and died on 18 Oct 1785 in Augusta County, Virginia at age 73. General Notes: In 1773 court papers contain the statement "Robert Bratton, aged 60 years, 20 May 1772." In his will he mentions wife, Ann, sons James, George, John and Adam, daughters Agnes (husband William Givens) and "unhappy daughter" Mary. Son John named trustee of £200 designated for support & maintenance of dau Mary. Proved 18 Oct 1785 by John Poage & John Dunlap. Hening's Statutes Volume 7 page 183 Sept 32nd 1758 - Details of a document by George II where militia are being compensated. To Robert Bratton, for horse hire L. 3 S. 17 D. 0 3 Pounds and 17 Shillings - equivalent to 326.63 Pounds today. Robert Bratton settled in Orange County, Virginia, now Augusta. He owned 2,284 acres. he was the Captain of the militia in the French and Indian War 1756-1758; also a memeber of the Council of War for the protection of the Virginia frontier in 1756. He still served as Captain of the militia in 1783 even though he was 70 years old. DAR #90436 Calender of Virginia State Papers Vol 2 pg 364 states that he was given orders to fill up his company with recruits for the Snow Campaign from York County, South Carolina. The House of Dunlap pgs 83, 91; Soldiers Wives 1783, Capt Robert Bratton, Pastures pg 410. Will of Robert Bratton, May 10, 1783 in Augusta County, Virginia, VA-Will Bk 6 pg 492. In 1745 Robert became owner of the Lewis-Patton plots on Big Calf Pasture, a large estate willed to son Adam Bratton in his will May 10, 1873. On Mar 20, 1755 Robert Bratton qualified for his Commission as Captain of the militia at age 43. 6 days later Gen Edward Braddock's 44th and 49th Foot Regiments landed at Alexandria as the French and Indian War opened the Virginia front. Bratton's first service was on the Council of War, held at Staunton, Virgina to prepare for the defense of the Virginia frontier.

Robert married Ann McFARLAND, daughter of Robert McFARLAND and Ester HOUSTON, in 1745 in Augusta County, Virginia. Ann was born about 1717 and died after 1783 in Augusta County, Virginia. Marriage Notes: An Augusta County, Virgina Court Judgment contains the notation "Ann Dunlap, 18 Jun 1745 while she was single." They must have married after that date, but before Jun 1747 when Robert rec'd judgment regarding the debt owed to wife, Ann.
