Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

  • Pg. 110-112. Indenture 16 July 1745 between James Patton and John Lewis, of Augusta County, and Robt. Bratton of same.. for five shillingsll sold 834 acres in Augusta County, lying on the Great River of the Calf Pasture.. beginning James Lockridge's line... (signed) James Patton (seal), John Lewis (seal). Witnesses: David Kindred (poss. Kincaid), Loftis Pullin, Adam Dickenson. Recorded Orange County 25 July 1745.. Received payment of ₤29.08.0.. Release acknowledged. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 10, Dorman, pg. 40].

Givens, and Agnes, his wife; to son, John, in trust, £200 for support of unfortunate daughter Mary; to 4 children, Adam, George, John, and Agnes (Givens); to son, Adam, home plantation, executor. Thomas Adams to be overseer. Teste: Joseph Fauntleroy, Will. R. Fleming, Jno. Dunlap, William Given, Jno. Poage, Wm. Given. Proved, 18th October, 1785, by Poage and Dunlap. Executor qualifies.   • MAY, 1773 (B). John Anderson vs. S. Mathews, Mathew and James Lockhart.--Chancery writ, 29th June, 1769. James Lockhart was Sampson Mathews's father-in-law, in 1765. Orator became joint security with Mathews on bond of James Lockhart and Randall Lockhart for collection of public levy in 1765; sometime after securities asked G. Jones and P. Hog to liquidate the account of the Lockharts, when a considerable defalcation was found. Patrick Lockhart was son to James. James Allen was son-in-law of John Anderson. Robert Bratton, aged 60 years, 20th May, 1772. Silas Hart, aged 50 years and upwards, 20th May, 1772. Randall Lockhart was son to James. William Crow, aged 30 years and upwards, 22d August, 1772. James Allen's deposition taken in Botetourt, 1771. Hugh Allen was James's brother. (Note: this record establishes Robert Bratton's birthdate as 1712).

He owned 2,284 acres. he was the Captain of the militia in the French and Indian War 1756-1758; also a memeber of the Council of War for the protection of the Virginia frontier in 1756. He still served as Captain of the militia in 1783 even though he was 70 years old. DAR #90436
  • On Mar 20, 1755 Robert Bratton qualified for his Commission as Captain of the militia at age 43. 6 days later Gen Edward Braddock's 44th and 49th Foot Regiments landed at Alexandria as the French and Indian War opened the Virginia front. Bratton's first service was on the Council of War, held at Staunton, Virgina to prepare for the defense of the Virginia frontier.

2. Capt Robert BRATTON was born on 22 May 1712 in Donegal, Northern Ireland and died on 18 Oct 1785 in Augusta County, Virginia at age 73.

General Notes: In 1773 court papers contain the statement "Robert Bratton, aged 60 years, 20 May 1772."

In his will he mentions wife, Ann, sons James, George, John and Adam, daughters Agnes (husband William Givens) and "unhappy daughter" Mary. Son John named trustee of £200 designated for support & maintenance of dau Mary. Proved 18 Oct 1785 by John Poage & John Dunlap.

Hening's Statutes Volume 7 page 183 Sept 32nd 1758 - Details of a document by George II where militia are being compensated. To Robert Bratton, for horse hire L. 3 S. 17 D. 0 3 Pounds and 17 Shillings - equivalent to 326.63 Pounds today.

On Mar 20, 1755 Robert Bratton qualified for his Commission as Captain of the militia at age 43. 6 days later Gen Edward Braddock's 44th and 49th Foot Regiments landed at Alexandria as the French and Indian War opened the Virginia front. Bratton's first service was on the Council of War, held at Staunton, Virgina to prepare for the defense of the Virginia frontier.

Marriage Notes: An Augusta County, Virgina Court Judgment contains the notation "Ann Dunlap, 18 Jun 1745 while she was single." They must have married after that date, but before Jun 1747 when Robert rec'd judgment regarding the debt owed to wife, Ann.
