to beloved wife Rebeccah use of half the dwelling house for life, with half the household and kitchen furniture, Negroes William and Mary, a horse, 2 cows, a saddle and bridle and $100.

to son William the tract where he now lives in Augusta County, 400 acres on the Big Calfpasture adjoining Elizabeth Bratton and William Ramsey; Negro boy Orvill and $300.

to son John the tract where ne now resides, surveyed by William Sitlington, part of 1,713-acre patent, purchased of John Rhea, and $300.

to son Andrew part of the same patent on Mill Creek, adjoining James McKee's heirs, including brick house, subject to wife's interest; Negro man Joe, half the farm utensils, waggon and harness, one fourth the household and kitchen furniture, #100.

Andrew is to provide his widow with servants and support them, and with a horse and cows.

to son Lewis the residue of the patent, Negro boy Isaac, half the farm utensils, waggon and harness, one fourth the household and kitchen furniture, all implements used at the Tannery, all hides in vats; $200.

to Andrew and Lewis a right-of-way and use of the spring below the old buildings, with a site for a spring house.

to sons Robert and David $600.

to daughter Rebecca McClung, Negro girl Syley and $200.

son-in-law John Porter is to continue to occupy537 acxres on Mill Creek, adjoining Samuel McDonnald, to raise his children, his wife having died. After 10 years the land is to be sold, with equal division of the proceeds among Porter's children.

to grandchildren "named for me" $50 when each comes of age.

any residue to be sold except old slaves Nell and Bob who can choose if they will live with William, John, Andrew or Lewis.

7. James B. BRATTON was born on 30 Jun 1746 in Augusta County, Virginia, was christened on 11 Mar 1749 in Tinkling Spring Church, Augusta County, Virginia, died on 29 Jun 1828 in Bath County, Virginia at age 81, and was buried in 1828 in Bratton Cemetery, Bath County, Virginia.

General Notes: Several sources state that as a Captain of the Augusta Co. militia he fought at the battle of Guilford Court House in North Carolina on 15 Aug 1781 and was seriously injured. I have not verified this. Church records for the Bath County settlers will be found at Windy Cove Presbyterian Church.

His inventory included usual household furniture and farm equipment, livestock, tanner's equipment, leather and leather-working tools, and a variety of books. There was also spinning and weaving equipment which was probably used by wife, Rebecca.

His estate sale was reported on 07 Dec 1830 by William and Andrew Bratton, executors, and Charles L. Francisco, Commr. Among the purchasers were: Robert Stuart, Joseph Burger, John Dunlap, William Crawford, Robert Bratton, Rebecca McClung, John B. Crawford, Adam and John Porter, Andrew Crawford, Robert McClung, Andrew Sitlington, John Gay, Robert Sitlington, William and James Youel, Joshua McDannald, James Berry, Joseph and Thomas Gwin, Robert Dunlap, Robert Graham, David Berry, and Elizabeth Lockridge.

In the WPA Historical Inventory, the original Bratton home is listed as belonging to "Jimmy" Bratton in 1791, deeded (or devised) by him to Andrew Bratton in 1828, who deeded it to Andrew S. Bratton in 1868. It is described as a brick home with 9 rooms and 3 rooms in the basement. Built in old colonial style, constructed of stone and brick. The second house, constructed about 1810, is shown as property of James Bratton, deeded (or devised) to John Bratton in 1826, to Andrew Bratton in 1839, and to James Bratton in 1869. It was still owned by Bratton heirs in 1937. Photographs of these homes will be included when available.

The cemetery is 4 mi. east of Millboro Springs, VA, on Rt. 42 on the right side of the road traveling east. Stone reads "Sacred to the memory of James Bratton who departed this life on the 29th day of June 1828 in the 82nd year of his life."

In his will he mentions wife, Rebecca, sons William, John, Andrew, Lewis, Robert and David, and daughters Margret (m. Crawford), Rebecca (m. McClung), and Agnes (deceased, m. Porter).

Line of William Rhea, Jr. Delivered to Samuel Clarke, Esq., for Andrew Bratton, heir of James Bratton, 23d February, 1836.

Died either June or January 29, 1828.

Captain at the battle of Guilford Court House during the American Revolution; built “Rock Rest” in 1806. Owner of 2650 acres of land in this vicinity and elsewhere; married Rebecca Hogsett. They were the parents of William Bratton of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. James married Rebecca HOGSHEAD, daughter of David HOGSHEAD and Margaret GILKESON, on 16 May 1774 in Augusta County, Virginia. Rebecca was born on 5 Feb 1757 in Augusta County, Virginia, died on 4 Jan 1834 in Bath County, Virginia at age 76, and was buried in 1834 in Bratton Cemetery, Bath County, Virginia. Another name for Rebecca was HOGSETT.

Marriage Notes: The record is a license only with bride's name not listed. However, this is probably the marriage to Rebecca Hogshead, date is consistent with known dates.
