1843 May 5 - Philip Walston, my great grandfather, was born in Gallatin Co., IL. He was the son of Levi Moore Walston and Phebe Rude.

1845 - His father Levi Walston is on the census for Pope Co., IL. Apparently the family lived there awhile.

1850 census - St. Francois Co., MO.

c. 1853 - Philip age 10, his parents moved to Duncan Twp., Mercer Co., IL

1860 census - Duncan Twp., Mercer Co., IL Philip Walston, 17, single, b. IL, lived in his parent's household.

CIVIL WAR

1866 Jan 27 - Philip's father Levi Moore Walston died in Mercer Co., IL.

1877 Jan 23 - Philip Walston, 33, almost 34, married Lydia Lloyd, 16, in Mercer Co., IL.

1879 - Philip's mother died in Mercer Co., IL.

1880 census - Mercer Co., IL Philip Walston Lydia Conrad 2

1886 Nov 9 - Philip's wife Lydia Lloyd Walston died shortly after giving birth to their son Earl Lloyd Walston. According to Bess Walston Day, her father Philip was working on the big ranch owned by George Beckton. Philip, his wife, and children were living at the Beckton ranch in a big white house. Philip had rented out his homestead to an old bachelor. Lydia was buried at the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Beckton. It was a new cemetery; Lydia Lloyd Walston was the fourth burial there.

1888 April 3 - Philip Walston married "Miss" Annie Jordan in Big Horn City (not far from Beckton). "Miss" Jordan had an 11-year old son Max Jordan. The marriage lasted just 2 years.

1896 June 23 - marriage license and certificate, Salt Lake City, Utah, for Philip Walston, 53, and Miss Adelia Edwards, 32. Groom's residence Park City, Utah. Bride's residence Sugar House Ward, Salt Lake City, Utah. "Miss" Adelia Edwards had 6 children. According to Bess Walston Day, this woman was a widow when she married Philip Walston. This marriage was brief. When it actually ended is not known. What is known is that Philip Walston left Utah and went to Salubria, Idaho, in 1898 with his two sons Guy and Earl Walston. Apparently the third wife and her 6 children did not go to Idaho with him. Instead, they went to Wyoming. Adelia Walston and her children were found listed on the 1900 Wyoming census. Whether she and Philip Walston were legally divorced is not known. What is known is that she was using Walston as her last name on the 1900 census.

The IDAHO YEARS... 1898 - 1918

1899 - Philip Walston sent for his daughter Bessie, 18, who was in Illinois and his daughter Bertha, 21, (my grandmother) who was living in Elm Creek, Nebraska, with an uncle and aunt (her deceased mother's brother and his wife). He sent $50 to Bessie so she could purchase a train ticket. She traveled from Illinois to Weiser, Idaho, by train. The train did not go as far as Salubria, which is where her father was living with her brothers Guy, 14, and Earl, 13. She had not since her father and brothers for 6 years. I do not know the circumstances of Bertha's travel from Elm Creek, Nebraska, to Weiser, Idaho. But she also probably received money for train fare and went by train. I do not know when it was in 1899 that she made the trip to rejoin her father and siblings in Salubria.

1900 census - Salubria Precinct, Washington Co., Idaho, June 11 and 12, 1900, page 183-a. Philip WALSTEIN (sic) born May 1843 in Illinois, age 57, widower. His father born NC; his mother born Kentucky. Occupation: carpenter. Renting. Living in his household are:

Bessie, daughter, born July 1881, age 18, single. Born In Missouri. Father b. ILL; mother b. New Jersey. Guy, son, born July 1886 age 14. Born in WY. Father b. ILL; mother born New Jersey. Earl, son, born Nov 1887, age 13. Born in WY. Father b. ILL; mother b. New Jersey.

NOTE: Their mother was also born in Illinois. Whoever told the census enumerator that it was New Jersey was wrong. Lydia Lloyd was born, raised, and married in Mercer Co., Illinois.

NOTE: Philip Walston listed as being a widower and there is no wife in his household. The "Miss" Adelia Edwards he married in 1896 in Salt Lake City, Utah, was not with him. His daughter Bertha was living in Weiser working as help in someone's household.

1900 census - Adelia Walston in Wyoming as head of a household. Living with her are her older children with a different last name than hers -- theirs was not Edwards.

Received in email with photo; Walston five.jpg This photo was take of Philip and his children, 1900 in Idaho, about a year or two after he left Adelia.

My grandfather Earl is on left Philip middle Guy is on the right

The two girls were never in Diamondville.....in fact never spoke of that time. Maybe they were not told. But, while in Diamondville, Philip, his son Conrad...got into a lot of trouble...with the law....minor larceny.....I'll send the "package"

I suspect that Earl and Guy were in Diamondville with Phil and Con, but nothing speaks to that....the boys were about 11 and 12 when Adelia married Philip......Conrad was 16/17....

Conrad didn't go to Idaho with his father, Philip, when Philip left Adelia.....maybe 1898, he went to Montana.
