My NOTES on Claire Walston Warner, my grandmother's sister, as of April 6, 2005.

1884 April 12 - Claire Frances Walston was born probably on her parent's homestead in Big Goose Valley which was near Beckton, a small "community" near Sheridan, WY. Her parents were Philip Walston and Lydia Lloyd.

1886 Nov. 9 - Her brother Earl was born on the Beck ranch near Big Horn City (near Beckton). Perhaps the Beck ranch became Beckton; I am not sure. Claire's mother died right after giving birth to Earl. She never saw the baby. Lydia Walston's funeral was held on Nov 11, 1886, and she was buried that day in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Claire was about 2-1/2 years old when her mother died.

1888 - Claire was 4 years old when her father married "Miss" Annie Jordan in Big Horn City. "Miss" Jordan had a son Max Jordan who was about 10 years old when they married. I do not know if Annie was a single mother or just what the situation was, but she had a son Max. This marriage did not last long. Philip Walston's second wife entertained men while he was away working and also when he was taking horses to Elm Creek, Nebraska, to sell over the winter of 1889-1990. Annie also incurred debts while he was gone. Philip Walston returned from Nebraska in April 1890 and found those debts and learned about her entertaining a bachelor over the winter while he was gone. This ended their marriage. In May 1890 he ran a notice in the Sheridan newspaper that he was not responsible for any of her debts. From this, I estimate that they separated at this time. Whether it was a legal separation or not is not known. The Sheridan Co., WY, clerk could find no record of a divorce. If there was one, Philip Walston would have been the one to file for it. The clerk could also not find a death for Annie Walston. It's possible he kicked her out and she just left the area. I could find no Anna or Annie Walston or Jordan on the 1900 census for Sheridan Co., WY.

1892 - Philip Walston moved his children (except for Claire) into a vacant house in the Big Horn Mountains. He left Con there to take care of the children while he worked. He gave Claire, age 6, to the Blakes to be raised by them. In 1900, Claire was 16 and still living with the Blakes in Beckton. She was listed on the 1900 census as being a "boarder" with them. Claire did not see her father nor her siblings from 1892-1904.

Spring 1893 - Claire's uncles Oliver and Benjamin Lloyd came by train from Elm Creek, Nebraska, to Sheridan, WY, for "a visit". They spent little time there. They came to take Claire's sisters Bertha and Bessie back to Elm Creek with them, which they did. See Elizabeth Walston Day's narrative of her life. They left Claire's brothers Con, Guy, and Earl in Sheridan -- hopefully their father was still living there.

1893 - Philip Walston said he left Sheridan, WY, sometime in 1893 to go work in Utah. His oldest son Conrad, 16, was left in Sheridan to do as best he could on his own and to take care of his younger brothers Guy 6 and Earl 5. Bess does not say how long Con and the two younger boys stayed in Sheridan. She does say that at some time, Philip had Con bring a team and wagon and the boys to Utah where he was living. Con had a cowboy friend help him on this trip. This could have been some time between 1894-1896 that the boys traveled from Sheridan WY to Park City Utah by team and wagon.

1896 - Claire's father married wife #3 "Miss" Adelia Edwards in Salt Lake City, Utah. At the time of his marriage, Philip Walston lived in Park City, Utah. He lived there from 1896-1898. The marriage did not last long. When Philip Walston left Utah in 1898 for Idaho, he probably did not take this wife with him . Adelia was no "Miss" Edwards. I found Adelia Walston on the 1900 Wyoming census. Living with her were her adult children. So either there was a separation or a divorce some time between 1896-1898. In 1900, Philip Walston is in Salubria, Washington Co. Idaho, listed as being "widowed". Apparently he considered himself a widower, even tho he had married twice after his first wife died.

1900 census - Beckton, Sheridan Co., WY. "Clare" Walston, 16, boarder living with the Blakes.

c. 1904. According to the narrative written by Elizabeth Walston Day, when her sister Claire Walston was 20 years old, she left Beckton, Wyoming, and came to Council, Idaho, to be with her father Philip Walston and some of her brothers and sisters who also lived there.

By 1904, both Bertha and Bessie were married. Bertha and her husband lived near Council, then they lived in Fruitvale -- always near Philip Walston until 1912. Bessie and her husband did not live there, but she must have seen Claire in 1904 when she arrived, as she said in her narrative that she had not seen Claire for about 14 years.

1905 Oct 11 MARRIAGE. Charles Henry Warner of Council, ID, married Claire F. Walston of Council, ID. The marriage was performed in Council by clergyman Howard C. Stover of Council (pastor of the Congregational church). Witnesses were Otto E. Brauer and Minnie Addington. I don't know who these people were.

1910 census - to do.

1913 - Claire's daughter Vera was born. I do not know when her son Billy was born.

1917 Dec 4 - "Clare" Warner witnessed a deed in Council, Adams Co., ID. This was when her father Philip Walston sold 40 acres to his son Conrad Walston for $1.00.

1918 Aug 27 - Claire's father died at the Old Soldiers Home in Boise, ID. He was buried in Morris Hill Cemetery in the Civil War soldier's section called Silent Camp. I have been to this cemetery and I have photographs of his tombstone.

1920 census - Idaho. Salome Walston, age 7, was living with a Henry E. Warner. Salome was listed as "grandaughter". Henry E. Warner was Salome's maternal grandfather (he was the father of Emma May Warner who was Salome's mother, wife of Earl Walston, Claire's brother. He was also the father of Claire's husband, Charles Henry Warner.

1923 - My mother, daughter of Bertha Irene Walston, says that when her parents sold their place in Cloverdale, OR, they went to visit relatives in Oakland, CA. In 1923, my mother was 9 years old so it was hard for her to remember years later just who they went to visit, but she thought it was her mother's sister Claire Walston Warner as my mother thought she remembered seeing Salome Walston there living with Charles and Claire Warner.

It's possible that she confused Salome Walston (b. 1912) with Claire's daughter Vera as Vera was born in 1913. But at some time, my mother met Salome Walston and the visit in 1923 in Oakland, CA, is the only time I can think of that she would have been able to meet her cousin Salome.

1930 census - to do.

1937 Alameda Co., CA, Directory: Warner, Chas. (wife Claire), laborer, residence 1362 Hearst Ave., B (Berkley).

1938 directory, same info except he is listed as being Charles H. and she is Claire F.

1948 Dec 10 - Claire Walston Warner died in San Francisco, CA. At some time she had been living with her sister Elizabeth Walston Day in San Franciso. See Bessie's narrative. Claire's ashes were placed in the Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland, CA.

I do not know when or where her husband Charles Warner died.

I have no information on her son Billy Warner.
