[Walston GEDCOM.FTW]

1881 July 9 - Elizabeth Catherine Walston (called Bess or Bessie) was born in Hopkins, MO. Her parents were Philip Walston and Lydia Lloyd.

1882 - Her parents, their son Conrad 5, their daughter Bertha 4, and infant Bess about 7 months, left Hopkins, MO, with some other families and traveled by team and wagon to Sheridan, WY. Lydia Walston was pregnant when they left. Somewhere en route, she had a baby girl who died and was buried along the trail. It is very likely that they traveled the Bozeman Trail as it was the only way to get to Sheridan, Wyoming.

1882 - Her father chose to settle in Big Goose Valley, about 5 miles west-southwest of Sheridan. 1884 - Her sister Claire Frances Walston was born. 1885 - Her brother Guy Walston was born.

1886 Nov 9 - Her brother Earl Lloyd Walston was born in Beckton; within hours after his birth, Lydia Walston died, leaving her husband with 6 small children, including the infant who survived. Not long afterwards, Philip Walston left their homestead in Big Goose Valley and went to work on Mr. Beck's large ranch as an overseer. He gave his daughter Claire, 2 years old, to Mr. and Mrs. Blake who lived in Beckton. They raised Claire. His son Con, now 9 years old, was given the responsibility of watching and caring for the younger children -- Bertha 8, Bess 5, and Guy 2. Infant Earl was cared for awhile by a Mrs. Works.

1888 - Bess' father married Annie Jordan in Big Horn City. At this time, her father obtained two lots in Big Horn City. From news items, he ran a feedstore and stable.

1889 Nov. - Philip Walston moved Annie Jordan Walston, 4 of his 5 children, and her son Max into a two room cabin. He then left for Elm Creek, Nebraska, with a band of horses he planned to sell. He took his oldest son Con, now 12, with him to help herd the horses.

1890 April - Philip and Con arrived back home. He found that his wife had been entertaining a bachelor and also had piled up debts. At this time, he and Annie separated. He ran a notice in the Sheridan newspaper saying he was no longer responsible for any of her debts. About this time, he moved into Sheridan for awhile.

1892 - Bess was now 11 years old. On Nov 24, 1892, she witnessed the arrival of the first passenger train to arrive in Sheridan. Her sister Claire was still living with the Blakes in Beckton.

1893 early spring - Bess' uncles Oliver and Benjamin Lloyd arrived in Sheridan on the train with their wives for a "visit", but it appears their main purpose was to take back the two oldest daughters with them. Bertha, now about 14-15, went to live with her uncle Oliver Lloyd and Bess went to live with her uncle Benjamin Lloyd in Elm Creek, Nebraska. Bess lived with her uncle and aunt a little over a year.

1894 mid-summer - Bess' grandfather James Lloyd had been visiting in Elm Creek. When he returned in mid-summer to his home in Joy, Mercer Co., IL, he took Bess with him. She lived with her grandparents James and Catherine Lloyd and their spinster daughter. Bess attended school in Joy and also visited with her aunt Frankie Vernon, who lived across the street from her grandparents. Bess lived with them about 2 years, from mid-1894 to 1896 (she was 13-15 years old).

1896 - Bess, now 15, went to live with her father's friend Jane Tomilson. She would live with her for over 2 years, until about age 17-18. She attended school and went to church.

In 1899, her father sent her $50 to buy a train ticket from Mercer Co., IL, to Weiser, Idaho. In late summer 1899, Bess, now 18, arrived in Weiser, which was as far as the train went at that time. Her father met her with a team and wagon and they traveled together to Salubria, where he was living with her brothers Guy and Earl. He also sent for Bertha, now 20, who was still living in Elm Creek, Nebraska. Bertha joined the family in Salubria. The only one missing at this time (1899) was the eldest, Con Walston, who was in Montana working as a cowboy.

Philip Walston was working as a carpenter in Salubria for B.B. Day, owner-proprietor of the Inland Hotel in Salubria. Bess went to work at the hotel as a waitress. This is how she met Eph Day, B.B. Day's son.

1900 July 1 - Bess Walston married Eph Day in the parlor of the Inland Hotel in Salubria, Idaho. That summer, Bess and Eph ran the hotel while his parents were gone. Salubria was becoming a ghost town as many people left because the railroad bypassed the town by 1-1/2 miles. The railroad ran their tracks to Cambridge and built a depot there.

1900 Sept -Eph and Bess moved to Warren, Idaho (a gold mining town) and took Bess' brother Earl, now 14, with them. Con went to work in mining towns in Nevada. Bertha went with Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Day to Hornet Creek, near Council. The only one still living with father Philip Walston was his son Guy, 15.

Eph, Bess, and Earl lived in Warren for a full year.

In the fall of 1901, they left Warren and went to see the Day's on Hornet Creek. There were no jobs for Earl there (he was a mining man). Eph and Bess went to Sumpter, OR, where he found work. They lived in a cabin about 1 mile from Bourne, OR, for awhile, and then they moved into a cottage in Sumpter.

They lived there about 2 years and then the mine closed down.

1903 Sept - Eph sent Bess to live with his parents out on Hornet Creek. She was pregnant and he wanted her to live with his parents during her pregnancy. By February 1904, Eph had joined her at his parents.

1904 Feb 15 - Daughter Faye Avoretta was born at the Day's place on Hornet Creek. She was delivered by a mid-wife Sallie Wilkie. Eph then went to work at Landore.

1904 July - Bess and little baby Faye, 5 mo old, traveled by stage from Hornet Creek to Landore. They spent one year in Landore.

c. 1904 - Bess' sister Claire, now 20, arrived in Council. Bess, however, did not see her at this time

- When Eph went to work in Phoenix, B.C., Bess and Faye went to Walla Walla, WA, for a visit with Eph's sister Cora (Mrs. Peter Kaufman).

1905 late through 1906 to early summer 1907, Eph, Bess, and Faye lived in Phoenix, B.C.

1906 - Eph's parents sold their place on Hornet Creek and moved to Wildhorse.

1907 early summer - Eph and Bess moved to Rosland, B.C. They were there briefly.

1907 - B.B. Day sent word to Eph to come back to Idaho and file for a homestead. They returned to Idaho and filed for a homestead in No Business Basin, which is where B.B. Day had also filed for a homestead near Wildhorse. Henry Day, Eph's brother, had also filed for one. Eph and Bess now lived about 30 miles from Council by way of Hornet Creek Road. They lived in a two-room cabin. They lived about 7 years in this cabin. B. B. Day sold his place in Wildhorse to Albert Campbell.

1909 March 15 - news item mentions Mr. and Mrs. Day of Wildhorse. This has tp be Eph and Bess.

1909 - Bess was pregnant. Eph sent her to Fruitvale to live with her father during the last of her pregnancy. Daughter Ruth was born there on Sept 7, 1909. Bess' brother Con had married (no date or place) and also lived there with his wife May (or Mae). Con walked the county looking for someone to help May deliver the baby. He found no one.

About Sept 30, 1909, when the new baby was 3 weeks old, Eph came to Fruitvale with a team and wagon to get Bess, little Faye, and the new baby. They went back by team and wagon to their cabin at Wildhorse.

1910 census -

1910 July - When Ruth was 10 mo. old, she became very ill. Bess took her from Wildhorse to the Henry E. Warner place on Hornet Creek for help. It was at this time that Bess saw her sister Claire. Claire and her husband Charles H. Warner lived with his parents Henry E. and Salome Warner out on their place on Hornet Creek. It was located between the old B. B. Day place and Council. According to Bess, Mrs. Warner saved little Ruth's life.

1911 - B. B. Day had purchased a peach orchard on the Snake River about 25 miles from Huntington, OR. Bess went there to visit.

Faye was now 7 years old. She boarded at the Fannings place so she could attend school. She was also sent to Bess' brother Earl's place to attend school. And she lived for 1 year with Claire and Charles H. Warner on Hornet Creek, so she could attend school.

1911 Nov 1 - Son Earl Walston Lloyd was born at their place at Wildhorse. He was due in December, so was premature and his birth was unexpected. He weighed 5 lbs. Mrs. Fanning delivered him. The baby was in trouble. Bess sent for Claire, who rode horseback to reach their place in Wildhorse. Claire stayed until Earl was out of danger.

1911 Dec - Christmas was spent with Claire and Charlie Warner who still lived with his parents on Hornet Creek.

1912 Dec - Christmas was spent with Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Day on their place on the Snake River in OR.

1914 - They built a large house on their place at Wildhorse.

About 1917, "it was necessary for me and Eph to go to Council to sign papers."

1918 early - Eph and Bess sold their place at Wildhorse. They had lived there for 10 years, from 1907-1918. They moved to Council and bought the Pomona Hotel and their first car, a Dodge. Faye was now 14, Ruth 10, and Earl was 7. Fay went to live in Walla Walla with Eph's sister Cora so she could attend high school.

1918 Aug 27 - Bess' father Philip Walston died at the Old Soldiers Home in Boise and was buried in the Silent Camp section of Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise.

1920 census -

1918 - 1922: According to Bess, they operated the Pomona Hotel in Council.

"The last time I saw Guy when I operated the Pomona Hotel, about 1920. We think he passed away in Yreka, Calif." "Con sold the Palm Cafe and got one in Weiser."

At some time, Eph and Bess went to Weiser.

1923 - They rented a house. Fay stayed with her aunt Claire and Aunt Emma in Portland where Emma ran a boarding house. Fay then came back to Weiser and went to work for the Weiser Hotel.

1925 July 4 - Eph and Bess' daughter Fay married Virgil Hetrick. Eph was in Council and did not attend. Fay and Virgil, along with Ruth, left the next day for San Francisco. Bess and her son Earl stayed in Weiser.

1926 May - Bess and Earl left Weiser for San Francisco. They traveled by way of Portland, where they went to go see Bess' brother Earl Walston who was living in Portland.

1928 - Bess' daughter Ruth married Gordon Lord.

1930 census - San Francisco to do.

1946 January - Eph Day died in a fire in Weiser, Washington Co., Idaho. He was buried in Walla Walla.
