My NOTES on Conrad Philip Walston as of June 2005, Helen Graves

1877 May 6 - According to one source, Conrad Philip Walston (known as "Con") was born May 6, 1877, in Mercer Co., IL. Other sources give a different birth date. He was the first born child of Philip Walston and Lydia Lloyd.

1880 census - Mercer Co., IL. Philip Walston Lydia Walston son Conrad age 2 yrs. )A mystery: their daughter Bertha (my grandmother) was born in 1878. She should have been listed as being in her parent's household, but she was not.

1880-1881: At some time after the 1880 census was taken for Mercer Co., ILL (Con Walston was about 4 years old), Philip Walston, his wife Lydia, Con and his younger sister Bertha moved to Hopkins, MO, where their sister Bess (Elizabeth Catherine Walston) was born on July 9, 1881.

1882 - In the early spring of 1882 (an estimate based on Bess Walston Day's narrative) Philip Walston loaded up his wife and 3 small children (Con 5, Bertha 4, and infant Bess about 7 months old) and traveled by team and wagon to Sheridan, Wyoming. They traveled with other families.

PHILIP WALSTON's LAND CASE ENTRY FILE: Philip Walston and some of the other families settled in Big Goose Valley, about 5 miles southwest of Sheridan. In his land case entry file, it is stated that he physically settled on the land on July 15, 1882, and he completed his residence in Feb 1883. Proof of his homestead claim was dated June 27, 1885, and the certificate was granted on July 5, 1885, by the land office in Cheyenne, WY. At this time, this area was in Johnson Co., Wyoming Territory.

As of June 27, 1885, it lists 20 acres had been broken. Crops were oats and hay. His family consisted of his wife and 4 children. This would be Conrad 8, Bertha 7, Bess 4, and Claire 1.

1886 Nov 9 - Con was 9 years old when his mother died at Beckton, right after giving birth to a baby boy who would be called Earl Lloyd Walston.

1888 - Con was 11 years old when his father married "Miss" Annie Jordan in Big Horn City. "Miss" Jordan had a son about Con's age who apparently then lived in the Walston household. According to the narrative of her life written by Con's sister Bess, the step-mother was not kind to the children.

1889 - In the fall of 1889, when Con was 12 years old, he and his father took a herd of horses from Sheridan, WY, to Elm Creek, Nebraska, to sell. Even at this young age, Con was a cowboy and horseman. They were gone until March-April 1890. When they returned, his father Philip found that his new wife had gotten him into debt making purchases (see newspaper items) and had also entertained a local bachelor. There was a separation and the step-mother and her 11 year old son left the Walston family. NOTE: there is no record of a divorce in Sheridan Co. or in Johnson Co., WY.

According to Conrad's daughter Irene, Philip Walston sold horses to Buffalo Bill Cody and Con and the boys (Guy and Earl) broke them. Irene's daughter Penny is supposed to know the Cody stories.

About 1893 - Philip Walston left Sheridan, WY, for Salt Lake City, Utah. He left his son Conrad behind in Sheridan to take care of his brothers Guy and Earl. (See Bess' narrative). His daughters Bertha and Bessie went to live in Elm Creek, Nebraska, with their uncles Oliver and Benjamin Lloyd.

About 1984, Philip sent for Conrad, Guy, and Earl. Con brought the boys from Sheridan, WY, to Salt Lake City, Utah, by wagon. Con, Guy and Earl lived with their father in Salt Lake City and then in Park City, Utah. In 1899, when Philip went to Idaho with Guy and Earl, Conrad struck out on his own to work.

1898-1899? Where is Conrad working?

c. 1899 - "Con came from Montana." (Bess' narrative)

c. sometime in 1900 - "Con went to new mining towns in Nevada." (Bess' narrative)

1900 census - Where is he? Did not find him on the 1900 Idaho census.

c. 1901-1908? FIRST MARRIAGE: At some time, at some place, Conrad married his first wife "May". I do not know her last name.

By Sept 1908, Conrad and his first wife May lived in Fruitvale (see Bess' narrative). "Con had married and also lived there (Fruitvale). On Sept 7, 1908, I informed my brother's wife May that I would have my baby that day."

1910 census - ?

"about 1913" SECOND MARRIAGE. Married Margaret Emily McAurdle in Winnipeg, Canada.

c. 1914 - son Mahlon born in Canada. c. 1915 - daughter Margaret born in Le Pas, Manitoba, Canada.

1918 - daughter Irene born in Idaho.

c. 1918 - "Con, who was also in Council, owned the Palm Cafe." (Bess' narrative).

1920 census -

c. 1921? "Con had sold the Palm Cafe and bought one in Weiser." (Bess' narrative).

c. 1921-22 - in Weiser?

WHEN DID CONRAD LEAVE WEISER AND GO TO CANADA? My notes say: " from 1928 to his death in 1961, Con Walston lived in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan".
