[Walston GEDCOM.FTW] My NOTES for Hankerson Ashby Walston as of Sept 2005 Helen Graves 4074 Hwy 147 Lake Almanor, CA 96137 hgraves@@psln.com c. 1839 - Hankerson Ashby Walston was born in Gallatin Co., Il. It became Saline Co. in 1847. He used the middle initital "A." on most of his Civil War depositions in his Civil War pension file. (I have a copy.) However, on one document he signed his name "Hankerson Ashby Walston", so I know his middle name was Ashby, a surname which goes back on his mother's side of the family. His great grandmother was Mary Ann Ashby Rude. 1840 census - Gallatin Co., IL. Age 1 living with parents, Gallatin Co., IL. 1845 - age 6 or 7, his parents moved to St. Francois Co., MO. They lived there about 8 years. 1850 census - St. Francois Co., MO. age 11 living with parents. 1853 - age 14-15, his parents moved to Duncan, Mercer Co., IL. 1860 census - Duncan Twp., Mercer Co., IL Hankerson, 23, single, born IL, living in his father's household 1862 Aug 12 - At age 25, enlisted in Hardin Co., ILL when he was there on a visit. Served in Co. B, 131st Regt, Ill Vol. Infantry as a color bearer until Sept. 16, 1863 (2 years). Then went home to Mercer Co., IL. 1864 Dec 20 - age 25, married Rhoda Armstrong in Mercer Co., IL. c. 1868 - son Henry S. Walston born in MO per the 1870 census. 1870 May - a dau Rhoda Walston was born in KS, per the 1870 census. 1870 census - Richland, Labatte Co., KS. Hankerson Walston age 28 on census. Says he was born in MO. This is not correct. He was 32 years old and born in IL. Wife Rhoda is 25 born IL. Son Henry S. age 2 born in MO. Daughter Rhoda born in May 1870 in KS.\ DIVORCE - between c. June 1870 - Dec 1873. Where? Labatte Co., KS or in Red Oak, IA? 1874 Sept 4 - married wife #2 Ruth A. Dunn in Red Oak, Montgomery Co., Iowa. His first wife Rhoda Walston married Theodore Jones in Clay Co., IL, Feb 18, 1878. In his Civil War pension file is a deposition from his second wife Ruth A. Dunn who says he had never been married before. Either Ruth did not know that he had been married before or she didn't want the govt to know about his first marriage in case it prevented her from claiming his pension.) 1880 census - Where is he? In Red Oak, Iowa? By 1891, Hankerson A. Walston and his second wife had moved to Friend, Saline Co., Nebraska. 1891 Sept 18 - Hankerson Walston filed for his Civil War pension. He said he was 52 years old and a resident of Friend, Saline Co., NE. 1900 census - 1906 Oct 25 - Hankerson A. Walston died in Friend, Saline Co., Nebraska. His widow Ruth applied for his CW pension. Witnesses to her application were E. J. Ferguson and a Lizzie L. Walston. 1907 April 20 - Ruth's mother Hannah Dunn of Gretna, Nebraska, deposed that she knew Hankerson A. Walston well and that her daughter had married him on 4 Sept 1874 in Red Oak, Iowa. References
