My NOTES on Phebe RUDE WALSTON as of June 24, 2005

Name: Phoebe or Phebe? On her widow's application for her husband's War of 1812 pension, she signed her name PHEBE Walston and said her maiden name was Phebe Rude. Because this is the only document I have with her signature, I am going to list her as PHEBE.

c. 1806 - Phebe Rude, daughter of Hankerson Rude and Susannah Yotsler, was born -- either in KY or in TN. The sources for her birthplace are: 1. History of Mercer Co., IL, daughter Nancy said her mother was born in Kentucky. 2. 1880 census of Mercer Co., IL, her son Philip Walston said his mother was born KY. 3. 1850 census of St. Francois Co., MO, birth year 1806, birthplace TN 4. 1860 census of Mercer Co., IL; "Phoeba" age 53 birthplace KY 5. 1870 census Duncan Twp., Mercer Co., IL. Phoebe Walston, 65, born KY, living with her married daughter Nancy Vernon and Nancy's husband Caleb Vernon, and their children. 6. 1900 census - daughter Nancy Vernon, mother born in KY.

ARRIVAL IN GALLATIN CO., IL, WITH HER PARENTS c. 1808 Exactly when Hankerson Rude arrived in Illinois with his wife and youngest children is unknown. Their son Jesse was born in TN in 1800 and their son Harvy was born in 1804 in TN (per census records). Phebe was born in either TN or KY c. 1805-1806. Illinois history books say that Hankerson Rude traveled to Illinois with the Chism Estes party. If this is correct, the Chism Estes party arrived in 1808. One history book says the Estes party arrived in 1806, but that is wrong per research on Chism Estes which says he led his family and others to Illinois in 1808. Phoebe would have been a toddler during this trip.

1822 April 29 - "Feby" Rude, age about 16, married Levi M. Walston, age about 30, in Gallatin Co., IL. The marriage was performed by Chism Estes, Justice of the Peace. I have a copy of their marriage record.

PHOEBE RUDE WALSTON'S CHILDREN:

1825 Aug 26 - birthdate of daughter Penina per research of Bruce Morse (sent to me June 23, 2005. See files.)

1829 - son Thomas Franklin Walston born per age on census records.

1831 - daughter Nancy born per her ages on census records.

1832 May 24 - son Silas Rude Walston born.

c. 1835 - a daughter Drusilla born. I have -0- further on Drusilla. I do not know if she died young or if she married in St. Francois Co., MO, or not. No record of her marrying in Mercer Co., IL, after 1853.

C. 1839 -son Hankerson Ashby Walston born (estimated per census records).

1840 Dec 25 - son Levi M. Walston, Jr., was born.

1843 May 5 - son Philip Walston (my great grandfather) was born.

c. 1844 - daughter Phoebe Jane Walston was born (estimated per census records).

OTHER SOURCES SAY... they had a daughter SUSAN. There is no daughter Susan living with them on the 1850 census. It is possible that if they had a daughter Susan, she was out of their house by 1850. If so, she would have to be born between 1823 - 1834. It is possible that she was their first child, born c. 1823 before Penina... or she could have been born between Penina and Thomas. More research needs to be done on possible daughter "Susan".

C. 1845 LEAVE ILLINOIS, MOVED TO ST. FRANCOIS CO., MO. about 1845 Levi Walston, his wife, and children left Gallatin Co., IL, and moved to St. Francois Co., MO. 1850 census

1847 - daughter Nancy married Caleb Vernon in St. Francois Co., MO. c. 1853 - Levi, Phoebe, and unmarried children moved to Duncan, Mercer Co., IL

1856 - son Thomas F. Walston married in St. Francois Co., MO.
